The cruise ship Costa Mediterranea operated by Costa Cruises had technical problems during the lowering of the tender boat into the sea. Immediately after the 293-meter long cruise ship anchored in Kotor, Montenegro, the crew started the procedure for landing in the sea the tender boats for transferring passengers from the ship to the port and back.
When lowering the lifeboat No. 6 the lowering system failed leaving the boat hanging on one side with the stern lowered almost to sea level. The repeated attempt at lowering the boat did not give results. The mechanics of the Italian cruise ship try to fix breakdown of the jammed electric winch. There are no injured passengers because when lowering the boat into the sea, there was no passenger who according to procedure board only after the boat is lowered into the sea.
There are no reports if any crew members are injured. The repeated attempts to lift the boat on the deck by the crew failed, because the stern of the boat fall again, after almost reached the deck of the ship.It is certain that Costa Mediterranea will not set sail in 2p.m. as scheduled to Rhodes, Greece and will likely remain until further notice.
Costa Cruises has arranged floating crane by local company to lift the lifeboat during the evening. After the boat is secured to the cruise ship it will be given permission to set sail by the local port authorities. In the next port of call Costa Mediterranea will have to repair lowering systems of lifeboat No.6 in order to continue its journey.
