Working in recruitment a large part of my day is arranging interviews for hopeful candidates looking to take the next step in their career. Now I appreciate that Interviews can be daunting, there is lots that you have to think about, prepare, research and make sure you get right both before and during the Interview. However there is one part to the Interview that no-one should ever struggle with and this is making sure you are dressed appropriately.
There is an old saying that is very fitting “You never get a second chance to make a first impression” and this is exactly right. When meeting with your new prospective employer you have to make sure that their first impression of you is right. You can NEVER overdress for an interview. There have been a few occasions when obtaining interview feedback from a Client, that the first thing they say is “dressed a bit casual” or “he turned up in trainers” while I would imagine that the way you dress will not define the outcome of the Interview, why would you give yourself a hurdle to overcome that need not exist?!
Like I said previously you can never overdress for an interview, if you don’t have a suit, make sure you wear a shirt, if you don’t have a shirt, borrow one. There is no excuse for making what is already a tough process any harder for yourself. Creating a good first impression is vital and sets you up in good stead right from the off.
